I ate at eleven Mexican spots in Burleson over the past month, and the only thing predictable was the tortilla chips. You know the drill here: half the options sit off 174 like fast-food outposts, the other half hide in strip malls where the parking lot tells you everything.

Some places served me cold carne guisada, others made the best brisket-stuffed jalapeños I have had in years. One spot fed my wife and me with a single fajita order.

Another made sangria good enough to skip the beer. The range goes from a sports bar with ice-cold pints to a tiny place where the chile relleno arrives crispy.

Here is where to eat.

I went to Arriero del Camino on a Saturday night with low expectations and left impressed. The massive machete is worth trying. It is a huge tortilla stuffed with meat and cheese, and it feeds two. The staff stayed attentive even when the place got busy. The space is clean and the chairs are comfortable. I did not feel rushed. The weekend pozole and menudo are the real deal. The prices are fair for what you get. This place tastes authentic, not watered down. I will come back for the pozole alone.

Old Texas Brewing Company is a mixed bag, but I keep coming back. The brisket stuffed jalapeños are outstanding. They are smoky, cheesy, and the best thing on the menu. My main dish came out cold on my first visit. The service was forgetful, but they fixed it quickly and offered a discount. The patio is great and the drinks are cold. The old-town railroad vibe fits the building. I want to love it more. They are willing to make mistakes right, which counts for something.

Buffalo Bros does the sports bar thing right. The beer is ice-cold and the food comes out hot. I ordered the fajita nachos and they had visible care in the layering. The service was fast and friendly from start to finish. There are many TVs, so you can catch any game. The prices are fair for the portion size. I have been three times now and the consistency holds. It is not fancy, but it is honest Tex-Mex with a bar atmosphere. I appreciate that they do not skimp on the meat.

The sangria is delicious, not too sweet. The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. I left full and happy. The place is small, but it has a warm feel. I tried the chile relleno on my second visit and it was crispy outside, melty inside. This is a solid choice for a weeknight meal.

Best in the area

La Esquinita de Chevas sets the bar for fajitas in this area. The order for one actually feeds two people. I took my wife and we could not finish the plate. The meat was tender and seasoned well. The tortillas were warm and soft. I have been twice in two weeks, and it is already my favorite. The service is quick and the place is unpretentious. They do not need fancy decor. The food speaks for itself. This is the best in the area, and I do not say that lightly.

The pastor meat is properly seasoned and juicy. They also brought house-made agua frescas that tasted fresh, not from a mix. The staff on site was professional and friendly. I have not tried their nachos yet, but I plan to return soon. For catering or a casual meal, this place delivers. I trust them now.

The manager stopped by our table to check on us, which felt personal. The El Jefë margaritas are strong and balanced. This place is pricier than the others, but you get what you pay for.
